Germany vs Argentina: Three things we learned

Germany, perennial World Cup semi-finalist have won their first World Cup title in twenty four years with a 1-0 win over Argentina. This is the first time a unified German team has win the World Cup having won their previous tiles as West Germany in 1990. The match went to extra time after neither team was able to break the deadlock after ninety minutes. Substitute Mario Götze’s superb strike in the closing minutes of extra time was the goal that decided the match. This marks Germany’s fourth World Cup win, deserving champions. Here are three things we can take away from the World Cup Final.

Joachim Löw stands alone
Having been in the shadows of Jürgen Klinsmann, Löw has made this German team his own and has achieved what Klinsmann wished he had done while in charge, win the World Cup. This win will enhance Löw’s reputation, silence his critics and secure his legacy. Recent German teams have looked unbeatable on paper but have fallen short when it mattered the most, not this time.

Argentina are no pushovers
Having steam rolled Brazil by a score of 7-1 in the semis, many people expected Germany to do the same with Argentina. The scoreline of 1-0 after extra time sums up the match very well, it was a close one. This match could have gone either way. Argentina can take heart from their performance and are the team to watch for in the 2015 Copa América tournament to be held in Chile.

Players lacked the clinical touch
Argentina had several chances to score first and take the match by the scruff of the neck, if only their forwards were more clinical.

Higuaín spurned a wonderful chance to put his team in front, he then scored but was flagged offside.

Messi was also the culprit on several occasions, rounding the German keeper only to shoot wide of the post. The Germans also had chances to go ahead, the most clear cut of which was when Kroos rolled his shot wide of the target. End to end mayhem.

With Germany winning the World Cup and with the blend of youth and experience in their squad, expect big things from this team at Euro 2016 to be held in France.
