British Number One Andy Murray is now at a shocking Number 10 in the latest world tennis rankings – his lowest position in six years – following his exit from the Wimbledon at the quarter-finals.
The 27-year old Scot – who had been placed at Number 5 before the onset of Wimbledon – had his defense of the men’s singles’ title on home soil prematurely cut short at quarter-final level by Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, who currently stands one place above Murray in the latest ATP list.
The Bulgarian – who is currently Queen’s champion – rose to Position 9 following an impressive run on grass this year.
The latest development comes just one year after Murray’s greatest moment in 2013 when the Scot lifted the title at SW19. He was last ranked this low after Wimbledon back in 2008, a time when he had also been knocked out at the quarter-final level.
The Briton had missed three consecutive months of active play at the end of the season last year after he had undergone back surgery, making him slip to Number 5 going into the third major of this year. But he has also not beaten a World Top 10 since overcoming Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in last year’s final at SW19.
Djokovic is this year’s Wimbledon champion – his 2nd title at the All-England Club and his 7th grand slam triumph – he replaces Spaniard Rafael Nadal at the top of World Rankings. He beat Roger Federer in five sets to bag his second title at SW19 and return to the top.
The 27-year old Serb says he is upbeat to rise to the top spot of the World Rankings once again after winning in London, the same place where he climbed to number one for the first time ever in his career following his 2011 Wimbledon victory.
32-year old Federer – who occupies the third spot in the ATP rankings – is once again Swiss Number One ahead of Stan Wawrinka who is World Number 4 in the latest rankings.
Everyone seems to be very quick to knock Andy Murray down – conveniently forgetting he had major back surgery only 8 months ago. Give the guy a break and maybe some encouragement for a change – too many fair weather supporters in the UK
