PS3 Hackers get $13,900 in 2 days from donations

Sony Is currently suIng all the people they know of who are Involved In hackIng theIr PS3 and shared InformatIon to everyone through the Internet. Among these people are Alexander Egorenkov and George Hotz who were openly sharIng the InformatIon they have obtaIned to theIr readers and subscrIbers through theIr websItes.

Alexander Egorenkov (graf_chokolo) Is tryIng to brIng back what Sony has taken from theIr PS3—other OS. He belIeves that what he Is doIng Is some sort of reverse engIneerIng but Sony does not see It that way. Sony seems to be successful enough In Its fIght agaInst these people. Egorenkov, knowIng that he needs more money to face a bIg company, started askIng for donatIons from the people who support hIm.

Guys, I never wanted to take money from anybody for my work. And I always shared my work and code wIth PS3 developers and communIty. Recently I was workIng on brIngIng LInux to PS3 back, as you all know, unfortunately SONY managed to stop me. Many of you offered donatIons to help me contInue my work and I always declIned as you know. But now I really need your help and support In thIs fIght wIth SONY. Please help me to pay my legal bIlls whIch are Immensely because I cannot pay them on my own.

There are more than 250 responses or comments that saId they have donated. In one of hIs responses, he saId he’s got 10,000 euros. That could be a lot but that’s not much to keep hIm fIghtIng Sony.

FollowIng Egorenkov Is George Hotz who also started askIng for donatIons from the people who used the InformatIon he shared prevIously. In 2 days, Hotz was able to accumulate donatIons more than he could use to pay for hIs lawyer and court fees. But everybody knows that donatIons wIll never be enough to pay for everythIng that Sony Is suIng them about.

Sony has also Imposed polIcIes on theIr game servers dIsallowIng hacked PS3s to connect for lIfe. It seems the company Is serIous enough In goIng after the people who have breached theIr system. But for the people who are always askIng for more from theIr PS3, what Sony offers rIght now Is not enough. Thus, there would always be a space for people lIke Egorenkov and Hotz.

  1. i hope these guys lose anyways. so not only do the hackers finally face justice for their pirating, but everyone who helped and donated to them realizes that they wasted their money.

  2. Just cause you hack something does not mean your intent is pirating! Pirating is something that is inevitable when a system has been opened to run independent developer software… Mr. Egorenkov is doing absolutely nothing that contributes to piracy… He is trying to give the public back Linux on their ps3’s, something Sony advertised as a feature of the “playstation computer”, but took away. First they said it was to ensure the security of the system, but it has now come to light they removed it because of profit losses(look into the lawsuit against Sony for removing Other_OS)… They gave their customers an ultimatum, keep Other_OS, and lose gaming capabilities on their gaming console, or lose it and keep gaming… They forced users to make a decision.. To choose between 1 of 2 main features the ps3 had been advertised to come with. For that I say SHAME on Sony! Geohot wanted to open the console up for the homebrew community, and even made an attempt to keep piracy out of his custom firmware. Hacker does not equal pirate, just the same as hacker does not equal cheater… Pirates and cheaters are people his misuse the work a hacker does!

  3. stfu. all hackers are pirates. “homebrew” is just an excuse to steal games. no one honestly gives a flying fck about linux.

  4. Obviously some do, as Graf would not be risking his hide to put it back out there… He foes nothing but work with Linux, and has been a member of the open source community for longer than the ps3. He has never stolen any info from Sony, has done all his work by reverse engineering, which is not illegal! He owns the info he finds, and he has offered that info for free, something Sony doesn’t like. Everyone is entitled to there own opinions, I respect yours, but there is no need for rudeness… I stand by my statements!

  5. ok first off, what George Hotz And Alexander Egorenkov were doing was considerd illegal, but some people do use the linux OS as a feature for playstation, now launching a Dos attack was the whole reason this “outrage” is going on. sony should quit focusing so much attention to these lawsuits and get our servers up and functioning asap

  6. I care about linux a great deal. It runs the computers and servers in my house. I also believe that not all hackers are pirates. Though a lot are, your statement is still FALSE.

    Regards,

    Jason
