Uruguay vs Russia Preview

This game sees two of group A’s qualifiers matchup to see which team tops the group and hopefully avoid a tougher draw in the next round, particularly because Spain and Portugal are favourites in group B.

Uruguay played just one warm up friendly before the World Cup and many thoughts perhaps they would struggle in the competition.

They did struggle in their first match against Egypt with Luis Suarez missing a handful of chances before Jose Jiemenez saved their blushes with a late goal.

They beat Saudi Arabia in their next game to qualify for the knockout round, but they will be looking to beat Russia here to claim top spot – that is easier said than done based on Russia’s two games so far.

Russia has been almost invincible in this competition, scoring 8 goals and conceding just one via penalty in their opening two games.

They are the lowest ranked team in this competition and that’s what makes their performance a very big surprise.

They out-ran and demolished Saudi Arabia 5-0 in their opening match, and when you thought Egypt found a way to stop them they scored three second half goals to beat the Africans 3-1.

Russia head into this game as favourites to top the group, but can they survive the attack of Uruguay and break down a defence that is straight out of Atletico Madrid? Time will tell.
