England vs Spain Competition – Nations League Stadium – Wembley Date: 8th September 2018 Kick-off time – 19:45 GMT
These two European heavyweights will get their Nations League campaign started with this game as they both looked to put on a performance after indifferent World Cup campaigns in the summer. England had their best World Cup campaign in over two decades at the Russia 2018 World Cup. Gareth Southgate led them to the semifinals, and later admitted that they had overachieved. Even if he was telling the truth, the fact remains that his boys have made the nation fall in love with watching their national team play again and they have to build on that in this competition. Southgate should get the same impressive performance in this game as he has called up almost the same players with Raheem Sterling the only significant absentee. Spain failed to reach the heights of their Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 campaign in this summers World Cup. After rebuilding a team that lost some of its biggest players and their manager just before the tournament kicked off, they lost to Russia in the round of 16. Luis Enrique has been tasked with bringing back the glory days to La Roja and this is his first major tournament so he will no doubt be looking to set down a marker in this game. With most of their established names retiring after the World Cup, it should be a tough night for his new team. England come into this game unbeaten at Wembley since 2016 and in that time they have won 10 of 14 games there. Spain have not been beaten in normal time since Euro 2016 however they have not won in 6 of their last 9 games. Oddsmakers have separated these teams by the finest of margins making Spain very slight favourites to come out on top. Goal markets suggest this will be a tight, low-scoring affair.
