San Francisco 49ers vs. New Orleans Saints Preview

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to rebound from their loss last week to Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers when they take on Drew Brees and the NFC South leading New Orleans Saints at the Superdome on Sunday, November 17 at 4:25 pm. ET.

This is the 49ers first trip back to New Orleans since they lost the Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens, they entered the season with hopes of repeating as the NFC champions, and getting another chance to win the Super Bowl. Things haven’t gone exactly as planned, because they are currently two games behind the Seattle Seahawks for their division lead, and will be the 6th seed in the NFC if the season ended today.

The 49ers defense is still dominating; they are 4th in the league in points allowed per game at 17.2, and 6th in yards per game at 316.8. Their running game is still one of the most dominant in the league with Frank Gore leading the way with 700 yards which is 6th in the league. The problem the 49ers are having this season is injury related, their top two receivers from last season Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham had missed most of the season, with Manningham playing his first game on Sunday, and Crabtree expected back soon.

The New Orleans Saints are rebounding from a season that was lost to distractions and suspensions caused by the bounty scandal they were involved in. Head Coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season, and the Saints who had the second best record in the league the previous year limped to a 7-9 record.

This season, Sean Payton is back on the sidelines, and has led his team to a 7-2 record, which is good for second place behind the Seattle Seahawks. Drew Brees is on pace to match his career best numbers which is quite impressive, and has him in contention for league MVP.

The Saints will also look to get some revenge against the 49ers, who defeated them in an epic divisional playoff game two seasons ago, and also beat them at the Superdome last season, in a game where Brees threw 2 interceptions and was outplayed by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who was making his second career start.

This is a game that has high implications for both teams, if the Saints lose, they will give the Carolina Panthers a chance to tie them at the top of the division, and if the 49ers lose, they will fall farther behind the Seahawks in their division, and fall into a tie a couple of other teams for the final wildcard playoff spot.

It should be an exciting game featuring one of the best offenses in the league against one of the best defenses.

Bookmakers make the New Orleans Saints slight favourites to come out on top in this game.
