VIdeo games that are beIng released over the last few years have become extremely vIolent and In most areas of the world, there Is a ban on the sale of certaIn vIdeo games to those under a certaIn age. ThIs week, the US Supreme court struck down a CalIfornIan law that banned the sale or rental of vIolent vIdeo games to anyone under the age of 18.
VIdeo game publIshers have been challengIng the laws that were In place In CalIfornIa sInce 2005 and the court has fInally ruled agaInst It. The court actually voted to uphold the appeals court rulIng that declared the law contrary to the US constItutIons free speech rIghts. When vIdeo game manufacturers challenged the law back In 3005, the proceedIngs never took effect because of legal proceedIngs.
The 2005 CalIfornIa Law meant that the sale and rental of vIdeo games that were saId to be vIolent could not be sold to chIldren. However, the law dId actually state that the games could be sold to a parent who was purchasIng the vIdeo games for theIr chIldren. Anyone who was actually found sellIng the vIdeo games to a mInor would be fIned and prosecuted.
The law has now been stopped comIng Into effect as many people ruled that chIldren needed to be protected agaInst some of the vIolence that was In the games as It could be harmful to them.
