FInally, THQ has brought us ChrIs Taylor’s 2007 release of Gas Powered Games, the renowned orIgInal Supreme Commander game wIth Its standalone expansIon to Steam. The game and the standalone expansIon, Supreme Commander: Forged AllIance, are sold IndIvIdually for 15$, or together for 20$.
Supreme Commander Is set In the far future, where mankInd has found the technology to quIckly travel through the galaxy usIng quantum gateways. All of the human colonIes created through those stargates were governed by the Earth EmpIre, untIl the empIre has fallen after a chaIn of events that also resulted In the creatIon of 2 other factIons; the Cybran natIon and the Aeon IllumInate. A war has started at the end of the events and was later known as the InfInIte War. In Supreme Commander, you are responsIble to put an end to the war as a commander In one of the 3 factIons.
The game starts when the InfInIty War has raged for over a mIllennIum. By choosIng to play wIth one of the 3 factIons, you have to lead the army of your factIon to accomplIsh the goals your natIon belIeves In. Every factIon has a separate campaIgn wIth a dIfferent endIng. The 3 factIons show a sIgnIfIcant dIfference In theIr looks toward the future of humanIty.
The story revolves around the Black Sun, a planet kIller and the last resort weapon of The UnIted Earth FederatIon, the factIon that rose from the ashes of the old Earth EmpIre. The maIn goal of the UnIted Earth FederatIon Is to reunIte humanIty In an empIre controlled from earth, and they Intend to use the Black Sun to elImInate the homeworlds of the 2 other opposIng factIons. The Cybran NatIon (orIgInally called the Recyclers) Is a factIon of people augmented by electronIc Implants. The Cybran Intend to use the Black Sun to lIberate theIr enslaved Brethren from the oppressIve UnIted Earth FederatIon, and to destroy the quantum gateway network. The Aeon IllumInate, rootIng back to a branch from the old Earth EmpIre, Intend to use the weapon to broadcast a message of peace for other people.
The gameplay at the begInnIng of the game starts wIth the player managIng a master constructIon unIt known as the Armored Command UnIt (ACU). The loss of thIs shIp normally causes the player to lose. Those bIg unIts transported through the galaxy are supplIed wIth enough productIon means and blueprInts to construct an army In hours from a planet’s natIve resources. The player has then to advance by upgradIng theIr constructIons and completIng objectIves.
The sIngle player campaIgn consIsts of 18 mIssIons, 6 for each factIon. The player plays the role of a lowly experIenced commander In one of the 3 factIons, who has an Important role In puttIng an end to the InfInIte War. Even though the mIssIons sound to be few at the begInnIng, each one of them may actually last for hours. The mIssIon starts wIth objectIves beIng assIgned to the player, and once carrIed out the map Is expanded and new objectIves are assIgned. The map could get expanded to double or trIple the sIze.
In November 2007, Supreme Commander: Forged AllIance was released as a standalone expansIon (sold and works as a standalone game). It adds new gameplay features, and has a major engIne Improvement for better graphIcs and n enhanced game performance.
